Owner/Director Brook Bartlett spent her teenage years downtown in the early eighties, making street art, painting and playing underground music. Exhibiting at the age of 17, working as a studio assistant to friend and mentor Jean-Michel Basquiat, hosting literary and music salons, doing performance art and curating group shows fomented the desire to create a gallery.

In the spring of 2005, a beautiful storefront became available in a cast-iron building on the Southside of Williamsburg. For three decades it had been closed to the public, its unique 10 ft. double casement display windows covered up. The raw potential was immediately apparent. A few days later, a lease was signed and Outrageous Look was born.

The vision for the gallery is inspired by Bartlett's heroes Betty Parsons, Leo Castelli and Marian Goodman. It is a fresh take on a venerable model. New talents are recognized and nurtured by the dealer in an extremely personal way. In a passionate artist/dealer relationship, inspired and relevant voices rise above the fray. The gallery is forming a family of artists whose work will be appreciated and influential for decades to come.

In it's first season Outrageous Look was named "Most Consistently Interesting Outer-borough Gallery” for 2006 by the Village Voice.
