Fountain Closes Submission Phase
With Addition of Milk Gallery, Sara Nightingale & Boltax Gallery, Fountain Closes Submission Phase
Fountain Miami, the independent alternative to art fairs held concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach, announces the addition of Milk Gallery – New York, Sara Nightingale- Shelter Island & Boltax Gallery – Shelter Island. With the addition of these three galleries Fountain has now filled its dossier of participants for its Miami 2009 exhibition.
“Milk, Nightingale and Boltax are galleries who have established themselves at the forefront of their prospective fields. From photography to painting, these art dealers bring a level of professionalism that compliments our independent flair,” explains fair director John Leo.
Milk Gallery’s installation of works by Russell Young, Ricky Powell, Sam Haskins and others set a precedent in which galleries like Brooklynite and Super/Prime closely follow. The rugged street approach of Russell’s silk screens are drenched in the lore of new york urban street life as evident in his Pig Portraits – Sid Vicious, 2001.
Boltax Gallery and Sara Nightingale bring a refined vision of working with new talents in Shelter Island NY galleries. With an emphasis on painting these two curators bring a maturity to balance Fountain’s do it yourself mentality. In Nightingale’s Booth, Jon Grande’s exquisite oils are translated from Cindy Sherman photographs and clearly embrace the in your face attitude of avant-garde energentics that has made Fountain a mainstay amongst the fairs.

About Fountain:

Fountain was launched in March 2006 in New York in an effort to leverage support for independent galleries overlooked by the larger, corporate-sponsored art fairs. The name “Fountain” is a nod to Marcel Duchamp’s controversial sculpture which shook up the art world when it was rejected by the Society of Artists’ exhibition in 1917. Similarly, in defiant contrast with The Armory Show, Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse, Scope and the numerous other international art fairs, Fountain has received wide public support and critical acclaim for its experimental slant favoring large, open and ambitious installation spaces. In form and spirit, the artwork exhibited at Fountain reflects the avant-garde attitude of the Dada art movement, while attracting the attention of the international clientele and top collectors who attend the more traditional fairs.
Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: “Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue.”
Plum – “Extreme, grassroots, and black sheep are names that perhaps best describe Fountain. While other art exhibits are puppets to corporate culture, this show keeps it as real as they come.”
