ArtForum- “Possessed of a scrappy, youthful verve lacking in its more prestigious neighbors. Fountain was distinguished by a vintage street/self-taught aesthetic.”

Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: “Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue. Here at Fountain, the artists and dealers are hungry and they welcome all visitors warmly.”

About Fountain:

Fountain was launched in March 2006 in New York in an effort to leverage support for independent galleries overlooked by the larger, corporate-sponsored art fairs. The name “Fountain” is a nod to Marcel Duchamp’s controversial sculpture which shook up the art world when it was rejected by the Society of Artists’ exhibition in 1917. Similarly, in defiant contrast with The Armory Show, Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse, Scope and the numerous other international art fairs, Fountain has received wide public support and critical acclaim for its experimental slant favoring large, open and ambitious installation spaces. In form and spirit, the artwork exhibited at Fountain reflects the avant-garde attitude of the Dada art movement, while attracting the attention of the international clientele and top collectors who attend the more traditional fairs.

Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: “Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. Fountain Closes Submission Phase

November 3rd, 2009 marcel Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

With Addition of Milk Gallery, Sara Nightingale & Boltax Gallery, Fountain Closes Submission Phase

Fountain Miami, the independent alternative to art fairs held concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach, announces the addition of Milk Gallery – New York, Sara Nightingale- Shelter Island & Boltax Gallery – Shelter Island. With the addition of these three galleries Fountain has now filled its dossier of participants for its Miami 2009 exhibition.

“Milk, Nightingale and Boltax are galleries who have established themselves at the forefront of their prospective fields. From photography to painting, these art dealers bring a level of professionalism that compliments our independent flair,” explains fair director John Leo.

Milk Gallery’s installation of works by Russell Young, Ricky Powell, Sam Haskins and others set a precedent in which galleries like Brooklynite and Super/Prime closely follow. The rugged street approach of Russell’s silk screens are drenched in the lore of new york urban street life as evident in his Pig Portraits – Sid Vicious, 2001.

Boltax Gallery and Sara Nightingale bring a refined vision of working with new talents in Shelter Island NY galleries. With an emphasis on painting these two curators bring a maturity to balance Fountain’s do it yourself mentality. In Nightingale’s Booth, Jon Grande’s exquisite oils are translated from Cindy Sherman photographs and clearly embrace the in your face attitude of avant-garde energentics that has made Fountain a mainstay amongst the fairs.

Fountain Miami will open to the public on Thursday December 3 at 11am and run until Sunday December 6 at 7pm. October 28th, 2009 marcel Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Greg Haberny, Grace Exhibition Space, Super/Prime, Brooklynite, We-Are-Familia and The Jon Frum Foundation are participants in Fountain Miami 2009

Affirming their stance with the cutting edge and independent flavor of art showcases, Fountain Miami 2009, the art fair alternative that takes place during Art Basel Miami Beach, adds 6 Brooklyn based projects to their roster. Staying true to their Brooklyn roots Fountain adds a bevy of talent to its register in a move expected by many to create a mainstay visual spectacle in the Art Basel weekend circus.

“We have long preached the positive qualities of the arts in Brooklyn and now with the addition of these six anchors from this amazing borough, Fountain clearly sets the standard for choosing the avant-garde over the status quo” explains fair director David Kesting.

Fountain Miami will open to the public on Thursday December 3 at 11am and run until Sunday December 6 at 7pm. There will be a reception for the public on Friday December 4 from 7pm until midnight and a WhiteHot Magazine Launch/ Filter Magazine Curated Music Program on Saturday December 5 from 7pm until midnight. About the Brooklyn Six:

Greg Haberny – this installation entitled Destroy All Monsters is a warped vision based on New York artist Greg Haberny’s alter ego; an obsessive compulsive and mentally challenged artist with the mind of a child who recklessly creates to destroy while wearing a bunny costume. http://suckerchump.com

Super/Prime - is an endeavor to appropriate and inhabit the unoccupied and raw domestic spaces left vacant in the urban landscape of New York City. Super/Prime will continue to migrate between vacant spaces as each becomes a dynamic and spontaneous site for the presentation and installation of exciting new work by young artists taking advantage of these unique and temporary places to force intimate reflections between viewers’ familiar experience of multi-dimensional space, movement, and form. http://super-prime.org

Brooklynite – The goal of Brooklynite Gallery is to connect the most provocative Street and Pop Artists from around the world with an audience in the freshest, most interactive ways. Past exhibitions have included artists such as BAST, AIKO, DAIN, MISS BUGS, BEN FROST & PERU ANA ANA PERU.  Challenging the traditional gallery approach to exhibiting and promoting an artists work, Brooklynite incorporates artist’s handmade invitations, short films, legendary music acts and live streaming, interactive coverage of their larger than life opening receptions in an attempt to bring people closer. http://brooklynitegallery.com/

Grace Exhibition Space – Grace Exhibition Space opened in September, 2006 with a group show for the people who supported us from the beginning. Run by Jill McDermid and Melissa Lockwood from 2006-2008, we featured installations, sculptures, screenings and performance art.
In 2009, we have focused (almost) exclusively on the exhibition of Performance Art from the local community, the United States and internationally. We have been featuring new performance artists weekly, as well as hosting a monthly digital arts series. Grace Exhibition Space is run by Jill McDermid, a performance artist since 1998. http://grace-exhibition-space.com

We-Are-Familia – is an ongoing creative study based on the concept of family. 50 artists, designers and musicians have come together to explore the powerful, complex ties which consciously and unconsciously touch all that we experience as humans. Presented in a series of 25 one-of-a kind keepsake boxes made from recycled furniture and surplus materials, WE-ARE-FAMILIA showcases original “mementos” contributed by its family of artists. For the exhibition at Fountain Miami WE-ARE-FAMILIA will showcase keepsake boxes Nos. 5 through 8 as well as new work by its art clan members including Seb Jarnot, Amy Ruppel, Jeff Lewis, Yoh Nagao, Tine Lundsfryd, Thundercut, Tobias Zarius, Change Design, Sweden Graphics and more! http://we-are-familia.com

The Jon Frum Foundation – Jon Frum is a figure associated with cargo cults on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu. He is depicted as an American World War II serviceman, who will bring wealth and prosperity to the people if they follow him. http://www.jonfrumartfoundation.com/

That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue. Here at Fountain, the artists and dealers are hungry and they welcome all visitors warmly. They are having fun and that’s the vibe. I felt like sitting down, having a beer, and hanging.”

Plum – “Extreme, grassroots, and black sheep are names that perhaps best describe Fountain. While other art exhibits are puppets to corporate culture, this show keeps it as real as they come.”
